Medication Project (Phantom Pain)

Problem

Many members of the partner association ENWDVA in Eritrea suffer from severe phantom limb pain. This often occurs after amputation of a limb or in cases of paraplegia. In Eritrea, the lack of appropriate medication frequently worsens the pain through additional stress. The attacks occur frequently and intensely, severely limiting those affected in their daily lives – many can hardly concentrate on work, family, or simple activities.

Solution

Since 2011, we have been supporting these people through targeted medication supply. The association procures mainly Gabapentin and Baclofen in Europe – proven medications for neuropathic and phantom pain – and sends them regularly to Eritrea.

On site, the partner association ENWDVA coordinates and monitors the entire therapy. Patients receive their individually adjusted dose three times a day. This effectively suppresses the pain, allowing many affected people to lead a largely pain-free life.

Benefits for the Physically Disabled

Thanks to professional coordination and reliable medication supply, the affected people achieve significantly higher therapy adherence. Phantom pain decreases or disappears completely – giving them back their quality of life.

They no longer have to constantly fear a sudden attack, can focus on other things again, participate in everyday life, and feel less restricted. Many report that the treatment has given them renewed hope and a sense of normality – a small but decisive step toward greater self-determination and well-being.

The project shows how targeted, long-term help from Germany directly alleviates suffering and improves lives in Eritrea.
